Athletic Performance

athletic performance

Whether you are a world class athlete, or just like to play recreational sports, everyone likes to perform well. As a former professional athlete I know the physical and mental skills that are needed to perform your best consistently. Below you will find a self-assessment, books, and resources to get you started toward peak athletic performance. I have extensive experience in sport psychology focussed on building confidence and getting your mind out of the way of you physical abilities.

Athletic Performance Self-assessment: goal is to answer yes to as many of the questions as possible.

1. Do you perform at your best at least 90% of the time?
2. Do you know why, when you are not performing well?

3. Are you able to clearly visualize what you want to accomplish?
4. Do you always frame setbacks in a positive way?
5. Do you let yourself know that you can be the best at what you do?
6. Do you practice properly as opposed to just often?
7. Do you take adequate time off?
8. Are you in the best physical condition for your sport?
9. Do you drink adequate fluid before and during your activity?
10. Are you completely focussed on the task when you are performing?

Tips to improve your athletic performance

  • Get a qualified coach who knows about sport psychology if you want to be your best. They can help you with observations that you may miss.
  • Learn to vividly visualize what you want to do. This actually helps to "wire" the performance into your body because it does not know the difference between reality and your imagination.
  • Learn how to positively frame every negative experience and constantly affirm your skill and ability. Listen to Tiger Woods in interviews, especially after a bad performance (very rare). He is a master at this. Get a coach or even a sport psychologist to help you.
  • No body works well if it goes at full capacity everyday. Like any other job you need at least one day off per week. Two is even better. Your body needs time to recuperate and process the learning you have given it.
  • If you have trouble with focus, you may want to try some of the techniques on meditation.
